Great Blue Herons Introduction

Great Blue Herons are rather common throughout most of the United States. It was not always so. As the page turned to the 1900's, they were endangered due to plume hunters. Most of the beautiful wading birds, particularly the snowy egret and the great blue heron, were sverely threatened. Conservation societies and the migratory bird protection acts passed between 1900 and 1918 were the result of the hunting to extinction and near extinction of these and many other birds. The passenger pigeon and the carolina parakeet were hunted to extinction before enforcement could save them. Curiously, even the laughing gull, so very common today, was severely threatened at the beginning of the last century. Legislation, and more importantly, enforcement, continued through the 20th century to further protect waterfowl and their habitat in 1934 and 1961, and 1986. The brown pelican and the bald eagle were nearly extinct and became the "poster children" for the Endangered Species Act" and the banning of DDT.

It should be noted that many bird species today are under threat once again. It more recent years it has been due primarily due to habitat destruction.

The views of great blues in this section are of extremely high resolution and detail. Great blue herons are a very common subject in wildlife art, so anything I present in this species will be of very high resolution and available as very large prints, though there may be just some behavior so unusual that I may have something in here that will only be available up to 12 x 18 inches.

"What You Lookin At?!"

Great Blue Heron

This elegant and graceful bird was captured in a very unusual and humorous pose. In the nearly two hours that I spent with this beautiful bird, he only did this once, at about half way into the shoot. He had been aware of me all along, and just suddenly gave me this rather curious momentary look, as if to say, "What you lookin at?!"

As quickly as he twisted into that humorous bend, he twisted back. It was all over in under two seconds. He didn't do it again, and in all the time I've spent with herons, I've never seen another one do it.

Great blues are rather common, and most of the time, they really are not doing anything all that unusual. It's a good thing I really love just being around these birds, because I would not have spent as much time with him as I did that day. He was truly beautiful, and I was getting many truly beautiful, very high resolution shots of him. Yet I was still thinking, "What am I really going to do with still more shots of another great blue?" After all, I already had hundreds of beautiful shots of great blues that I could produce poster size prints. And I'm not going to.

He taught me not to take common subjects lightly. Every once in a while, they do something special.

This large print makes cute and humorous picture to place at the edge of doorways, or in places to look around corners. Being about lifesize, he has a peek-a-boo look that makes people smile, and sometimes, laugh. We have one in our own home peeking around a corner, always ready to ambush guests.

Tricolored Heron

The tricolored heron is probably the most spectacular and beautiful of the North American herons. Truly stunning in their breeding colors and plumes, these birds almost look like they are aliens from another world. Tricolored refers to the white lower body, dark upper body, and deep reddish streaks on the foreneck. (Never mind all those other colors!)

Formerly known as the Louisiana Heron, the name changed when those folks who name birds finally caught up with the fact that the birds were found even more in Florida and Texas, oh, and the Gulf coast, East coast, and both coasts of Mexico.
