Carpenter's Rig (Early 20th Century Walking Beam Type Oil Exploration Drilling Rig) Long before the Western Company was advertising in the 1970's, "If you don't have an oil well, Get One! You'll love doing Business with Western.", the Oil Well Supply Company of Bradford Pennsylvania (and other locales) was actually selling derricks, drilling rigs, supplies and kits in places like the Spindletop and the East Texas oil fields in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Carpenter's Rig was a particular kit sold with a variety of options by the Oil Well Supply Company from the 1880's till the 1920's. Options included various steam engines and tool packages, all produced by the company in its numerous factories. Assembly drawings that originally came with the derrick kit were very similar to this drawing. The illustrations, lettering, and descriptions were produced in the same style as the archival drawings from the company offices in Garland, Texas. This drawing was produced from original Oil Well Company assembly drawings in 1978 for an accurate display model I produced for an oil company during my former life as a model maker and industrial designer. The original model featured over 50 brass lost wax castings. A craftsman model kit was to be produced for the model railroad market. Alas, the patterns were damaged in processing for centrifugal casting and that part of the project was scuttled. A model kit with lost wax castings would be way too expensive. The original drawing was hand drawn and lettered in pen and ink on vellum . It was then reproduced on a lithographic press at a reduced size to match HO model railroad scale. The drawing was printed on fine parchment paper in 1978. 1000 copies were originally produced and no more will (or can) be produced. About 200 were sold in the 1980's to an art print dealer. About 100 were scrapped due to the occasional irregularities of natural parchment. Any others found to have imperfect paper will not be sold. This will probably leave about 600 prints. These 600 prints are now being offered for sale.
